I've done a bit more work on this new head - here are a couple of new photos. I have added a cloth layer and sized the surface ready for painting. I've included a close-up of the face with pencilled-in features to show the textured cloth surface. I won't smooth this back too much prior to painting as I want this texture to show on the completed head. I'm pretty happy with this so far - she has just the expression I was aiming for. Hope I don't mess it up too much when I paint!

Having recently completed a couple of pressing commissions, I am indulging myself a little with this new piece. I'm aiming for nuances of expression - apprehension, tentativeness - in this child's face, so I'm working on a slighlt larger scale than I normally do to make achieving that a little easier. Not quite sure where this is going next, but I have a few ideas gestating and will keep you posted!

Late on Thursday last, I dropped my purse as I was crossing a busy street without realizing I had done so. When I discovered the loss, you can imagine I was fairly upset - not at losing my hard-earned -there wasn't that much cash in it, but the thought of having to deal with getting cards, driver's license, medicare card etc. cancelled and replaced is enought to drive a person to drink! I had a sleepless night that night. Then, on Friday morning I had a call from the police - the purse had been handed in that morning with everything untouched. This act of commendable honesty follows another a few weeks ago when my grand-daughter's expensive mobile phone was handed in by another honest person. I gives me great faith in humanity to be on the receiving end of such kindness! Thank you, thank you honest people!
Later on Friday morning the mail delivered this book......."Handmade in Tasmania" by Steven French. This is a great little book featuring a diverse range of Tasmanian craftspeople from instrument makers, a cheesemaker, distiller etc and including YOURS TRULY! So, toot, toot I'm blowing my own trumpet a little! What was shaping up to be a very bad week ended up being the best!

I have listed some new stuff in my Etsy store, including something that is a new idea: I have decided to offer some sculpted paperclay doll heads just like the ones I make when I am creating a new doll - each one unique and slightly different like all "siblings" - I thought some of you might like the opportunity to have a head to finish off yourself. Each one will be sold with a body pattern and instructions as well as a few other things to help with the finishing-off. If you are interested, go to my Etsy store for full details (http://www.susiemcmahon.etsy.com/)

I signed up to make a doll for the ADO Alice blog event...........well, stuff got in the way & I ran out of time to make a doll. I did, however, do a couple of "Alice" paintings........only managed to photograph one before they were sold (yeah, I know I am slack!), so I'm sharing that instead. You have to admit - the Alice in the painting looks very doll-like.

I've just completed this piece of sculpture - it is around 50 cms high and truly mixed media, being made of clay, wood, fabric, plastic, echidna quills and silk cocoons as well as paint and "Apoxie-Sculpt". This is one of several I am working on for The "ArtEntwine" exhibition in August.
As yet untitled.
